Post 7: The Anything Blog

Image
Hey guys! So this week, I've decided that I'm going to talk about trauma and the role of psychology in helping patients recover from traumatic experiences.  Trauma therapy is, as its name suggests, a form of counseling used to help people deal with traumatic psychological experiences. Psychological trauma can impact someone's life for many years after the event was experienced. It's not something that can be overcome easily or resolved on your own and often requires continuous therapeutic sessions to be dealt with.  This topic actually has been a point of interest to me for a while now, and I think it's so necessary that we understand the importance of people who work with those that are going through low points in their lives because of something that's happened to them or someone they love. My cousin is about to get her master's degree in Clinical Social Work and Trauma Therapy in May. Three years ago, I didn't fully understand what exactly...

Post 6: Personality Tests

Image
Hey guys! This week I took a few personality tests and it was pretty cool. Culture Fair IQ Test: This test I thought was a pretty neat way of testing spatial reasoning and logic. Basically what you had to do was solve a bunch of logic puzzles that involved pictures. The purpose of the test was to evaluate general intelligence using abstract relations and mathematical/spatial skills. My overall score was 115/82 percentile, and it said that those results indicated that I performed pretty well on this test. However, even though I was surprised at these results, I don't think it's that good of a measure of "IQ", as it didn't really cover much more than it should have. 10 puzzles don't measure your entire IQ... Classical IQ Test: After taking this IQ Test, I could already see that it was probably more accurate than the other one, as it covered all kinds of things and tested different types of reasoning. It said I scored higher than 52 percentile, which was ki...

Post 5: Senses and Stuff

Image
Hey guys! This week I read an article about the connection between certain diseases and their odor. It was kind of gross honestly, but also really cool! For example, scrofula is associated with the smell of stale beer, typhoid fever with baked bread, yellow fever with a butcher's shop, diptheria with a sweet scent, diabetic ketosis with decomposing apples, and hyperaminoaciduria with dried malt/hops. It mentioned how doctors in the early days started sniffing their patients to diagnose them with certain diseases. Animals were also able to detect disease in humans, and in one study, rodents were able to avoid sick individuals through odor detection alone, and dogs were able to detect cancer in humans through scent! Also, the literal sense of smell could also play a part in diagnosis of dementia and Parkinson's disease. An impaired sense of smell is one of the early signs of both diseases, and it affects their ability to identify and recognize odors. I thought this was super inte...

Post 4: My Life Story

Image
Age 0-5: So just a disclaimer, this is probably going to be really boring so just bear with me.  Obviously, I don’t really remember much about these years but here I go!! I was born on February 4th, 2003 (aka the worst day of my brother’s life) here in Houston, Texas. I started talking later that year around August, and started walking a year later. I began preschool in January of 2007, and began kindergarten at Dulles Elementary in August!  Age 11-14: oh god. middle school. thus began some of the best/worst years of my life :) I went to quail valley middle school for all three years and made some of my best friends there! (we're not gonna get into the actual school part bc that’s another story lol) Age 14-16: I started high school in August of 2017. Freshman year altogether was kind of a blur and nothing special really happened if i’m being honest LOL. That summer though, I went to Belize with my family and had a great time! Overall, pretty soli...

Post 3: BioHeroes!

Image
Hey everyone! My BioHero is the Mighty Messenger (medulla oblongata and acetylcholine). Gifted with great intellect and a daring spirit, the Mighty Messenger is well-known in her community for bringing people together. Many years ago, her parents were incarcerated due to a violent argument they got into with each other. Ever since then, she vowed to be super helpful and kind to the people around her. Her friends have always known her as the mediator in conflicts, and everything she did always came from the heart. Her mantra is that everyone should treat other with love and respect, and communication is key to building strong relationships. She uses these special communication powers to combat evil and advise people on how to resolve their conflicts with each other to make the world a better place, one kind word at a time! The Mighty Messenger is part of the Fantastic Four, accompanied by Queen Cobra, Talking Embracer, and Iris Adrenaline. Together they work to defeat evil! ...

Post 2: How good is your memory?

Image
Hey guys! I took a few memory tests this week and overall, I've discovered that my memory is pretty average? The tests were fun to take, and I'll definitely be taking more in the future to see if my memorizing ability changes! Number Memory Test This test started with testing if you were able to recall one number, and went up from there. I was pretty satisfied with my results, as I was able to remember 11 digits. However, I think that these results can easily vary based on certain factors, like if the numbers were in an easily identifiable pattern, or if they followed a sequence of some sort. Because of this, I think the results aren't as accurate as they could be. Everyday Object Memory Test This memory test tested whether or not you could remember what a penny looked like (i.e. what side Abe Lincoln was facing, and where the writing on it was). I surprisingly got everything right except for what side Abe was facing. I think I probably would have done better if ...
